Walmart’s giving extends across the globe.

We give back to communities in the international markets where we operate through locally managed giving programs. We support international philanthropy in the areas of hunger and nutrition, environmental sustainability, women’s economic empowerment and disaster relief.

In China, 2015 brought two new Walmart Foundation training initiatives for women’s empowerment. The first funded the China Chain Store & Franchise Association (CCFA) development of a training curriculum for women seeking retail employment. It seeks to train 8,000 women and includes a special focus on food safety. The second, led by Youcheng, will deliver online training for marginalized women in poor communities looking to enter e-commerce, also aiming to reach 8,000 women.

China is part of the five-year open-source Women in Factories Training Program, which was developed by CARE and funded by the Walmart Foundation. The program, implemented in collaboration with local NGOs at 127 factories in China, Bangladesh, El Salvador, Honduras and India, teaches critical life skills related to communication, hygiene, reproductive health, occupational health and safety and more. It will help 60,000 women in 150 factories to develop the work and life skills necessary for personal and career development.

The China initiatives are part of Walmart’s global Women’s Economic Empowerment Initiative. In 2011, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation pledged to contribute $100 million in grants to further develop the initiative, which aims to improve the lives of women around the world by making a substantial difference in three key areas – sourcing, training, and diversity and inclusion. To date, nearly 1 million women have been empowered through trainings, and $16.46 billion has been spent sourcing goods from women-owned businesses since 2013.

Walmart’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs also touch on sustainability and community support. In China, these include a sustainable manufacturing “Green Supply Chain” program in Dongguan that is providing technical training and insights to factories to improve efficiency and lower their environmental footprints, and a local charitable meals program that is providing nutritious meals to schoolchildren in poverty-stricken regions in collaboration with the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation and Tencent Charity. Around China, Walmart is mobilizing partners across the supply chain to make a difference in creating opportunities, increasing sustainability, and protecting local communities.

And Walmart is taking these ideals around the world. For a look at the food initiatives Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are supporting globally, take a look at the graphic below.
