    Walmart China president and CEO Christina Zhu named Fortune’s Most Powerful Women in Business for 2020

    Fortune magazine has been releasing the annual Most Powerful Women in Business list since 1998.  Its first China list of the Most Powerful Women in Business was out in 2010. This list aims to recognize the important role of women leadership and the immense contributions of female leaders. Candidates are selected by vigorous criteria in several dimensions, including size and importance of enterprises led by women in the global economy, corporate business status and development direction, career history and social and cultural influences of shortlisted women, and innovative practices of shortlisted women in corporate and industrial development.

    "In the business world, more and more outstanding female leaders are breaking through the ceiling or boundary created by gender, gaining wider business space and making remarkable contributions to the world.

    Walmart, the world's 'largest' company, has about 100,000 associates in China, and has opened more than 400 stores in more than 170 cities in the country over the past 20 years. In mid-2020, Christina became President and CEO of Walmart China, tasked to lead Walmart to expand into new business territory and upgrade its business strategy.

    Christina was once President for Greater China Region at Fonterra Co-operative Group. Under her leadership, Fonterra Co-operative Group made successful brand upgrading by making channel transformation, embracing digitalization and pursuing continuous innovation. Those past experiences has pinned her on high expectations at Walmart.

    In July 2020, Walmart extended its “1 Hour Delivery” service to all cities where Sam’s Club operates.. In August 2020, all 400 Walmart stores in China realized “1 Hour Delivery” for customers in the distance of 3-5km. Walmart's second quarter results in the current financial year showed that its net sales in China increased by 10.4% and comparable sales were up by 8.7%; and Sam's Club achieved double-digit comparable sales growth and 104% net e-commerce sales growth. The industry widely believes that Christina will lead Walmart China to complete its retail business transformation to omni-channel development.

    Promoting the growth of female leaders in the company

    Walmart China encourages talent diversification, especially cultivating female staff and executives. Currently, around 65% of Walmart China’s associates and nearly 50% of management team (Director’s level and above) are female. In 2009, Walmart China established the “Walmart China Women & Inclusion Leadership Committee (WIL)” for driving women's career development. 

    Helping women to develop in society

    In September 2011, Walmart announced to launch of a new project to leverage its global business presence, resource advantages and global supply chain network to promote women's economic independence and provide more development opportunities for women. Walmart is closely following the pace of economic and social development in China and energetically integrating its existing resources to understand and meet the real needs of economically disadvantaged women, female entrepreneurs and working women, providing more precision help for those women groups in need.

    As of October 2020, Walmart China has made a monetary donation of 14.34 million RMB to the China Women’s Development Foundation on @Her New Ventures Project - CWDF’s Revolving Loans for Mothers Project, which helps women in selected regions to be employed, re-employed, or become small business entrepreneurs and empowers women by issuing revolving funds and providing technical support and training for mothers. The program adopts the model of “Small Fund For Revolving Use”, and leverages various small scale business activities, supplemented with trainings and communication activities. The project has been implemented successively in 11 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) including Shaanxi, Hebei, Hunan, Yunnan, Inner Mongolia, Tianjin, Hubei, Fujian, Sichuan, Heilongjiang, and Chongqing. Walmart also conduct training for female start-ups and women-owned Business. (100,000 beneficiaries from the projects of Revolving fund for rural mothers and Training for female start-ups and women-owned Business supported by Walmart China).
