At the recently held 2025 Supplier Summit, Walmart China officially launched its Carbon Reduction Incentive Program for Suppliers (the Incentive Program). The program offers financial incentives to help suppliers invest in energy conservation and emissions reduction, creating shared wins through supplier economic benefits and environmental sustainability.
Walmart China shares its sustainability approach at its 2025 Supplier Summit, calling on partners to advance carbon reduction efforts.
For years, Walmart has been at the forefront of sustainable business practices, committed to the democratization of climate action. It drives, coordinates and supports suppliers across product categories and regions to reduce carbon footprint, accelerating the retail sector’s transition to net-zero emissions. In 2017, Walmart launched “Project Gigaton” with an ambitious goal: reduce or avoid one billion metric tons (a gigaton) of greenhouse gas emissions in product value chains by 2030. With strong supplier engagement, Walmart achieved this ambitious target six years early in 2024. The company also announced its continued collaboration with suppliers to reduce carbon emissions.
The Incentive Program recognizes and rewards suppliers’ energy conservation and emissions reduction efforts. It also reflects Walmart’s commitment to China’s “Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality” strategy and its support to Chinese suppliers in their green development investments. Suppliers who sign up for Project Gigaton and meet Walmart’s carbon reduction targets and requirements qualify for additional cash discount benefits. These benefits not only drive decarbonization but also improve cash flow and lower operational costs*.
At the Supplier Summit, Walmart China recognized suppliers with outstanding decarbonization achievements in Project Gigaton. The Incentive Program was met with enthusiastic inquiries and positive feedback from numerous partners.
Loftex China Ltd., a textile manufacturer, has been recognized by Walmart as “Giga Guru” for six consecutive years. The company stated: “We were among the first batch of factories to sign up for Project Gigaton. We appreciate the technical support and learning opportunities provided by Walmart for our energy conservation and emissions reduction efforts. As sustainability gains momentum in global trade, companies’ commitment to sustainability creates economic benefits. It further fulfills corporate responsibility in giving back to the communities and protecting the environment. Walmart’s incentive policy will definitely encourage more companies to participate in green, low-carbon initiatives.”
Wire King International Limited, a supplier of hardware and home products, also earned the “Giga Guru” honorary title. It commented: “Energy-saving and emissions-reducing measures help factories boost productivity and resource efficiency—key drivers of our long-term development. For suppliers like us in Project Gigaton, Walmart regularly tracks our carbon reduction progress, and offers ongoing technical support and training opportunities. With the launch of the Incentive Program with improved payment terms and other benefits, we’re excited to partner with Walmart on innovative carbon-cutting solutions from the earliest stage of product design.”
*To qualify for additional cash discounts under the Incentive Program, suppliers must also join Walmart China’s Early Payment Program. Introduced in 2009, this initiative offers flexible early payment options to help suppliers improve cash flow, accelerate collection of receivables, and ease working capital pressure.
Walmart has been working with suppliers for years to scale Project Gigaton’s impact across six action areas: energy, nature, waste, packaging, transportation, and product use and design. The company provides suppliers with end-to-end support for emissions reduction—from setting goals and taking actions to reporting results. Together, they build resilient supply chains and mitigate operational risks, benefiting both communities and the environment.
Since announcing its transformation into a "regenerative" company in 2020, Walmart has intensified its sustainability focus by placing nature and humanity at the center of its business practices. The company continues to expand investments in community and environmental sustainability, delivering shared value to customers, members, associates, partners, and communities.
