    Walmart China has appointed Alvin Liu as Format President of Sam's Club

    Walmart China announced that, effectively immediately, Alvin Liu has joined Walmart China as Format President, Sam's Club, reporting directly to Christina Zhu, President and CEO of Walmart China. Concurrently, Jane Ewing, Interim Format President, Sam's Club will end her assignment and return to Walmart International at the end of 2025. This is another significant move by Walmart to continue increasing its investment in China and advance its strategic business upgrade.

    Alvin Liu is one of the industry leaders in China retail and internet sectors with strong strategic thinking and operations leadership. He previously worked for the Alibaba Group, serving several roles as General Manager of Tmall Global, President of Tmall Import and Export Business, Vice President of Alibaba Group and President of B2C Retail Business Group, and President of the Brand Business Development Center of Taobao and Tmall Group. Leveraging his deep understanding of global brand localization strategies and keen insight into Chinese consumers, he successfully introduced numerous outstanding overseas brands into the Chinese market, enriching consumers' choices of high-quality imported goods.

    Before joining Alibaba in 2015, Alvin held leadership positions at Goodbaby China, MediaMarkt China (formerly part of the German Metro Group), Suning Appliances, and Haier Group, working across multiple areas including merchandising and marketing. He holds a bachelor's degree from Nanjing University of Science and Technology and an EMBA degree from the University of International Business and Economics. He has also served as board director for the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) and several publicly listed companies.

    Jane Ewing will end her assignment and return to Walmart International at the end of 2025. During the transition period, Jane and Alvin will work closely to complete the handover.     Having sustained strong momentum in recent years, Sam's Club now operates nearly 60 clubs across more than 30 cities in China, with plans to open approximately five new locations by the end of this year. Sam's Club's membership base continues to grow, supported by steadily rising renewal rates and active rates. E-commerce now represents over half of its total business.
